Hello! I'm Hati Valcoran, and I'm working on the Humblest Wizard for this pixel day! A small pixel art RPG about a mouse escaping a wizard's tower to find more of its kin.

Hello!


For those that haven't come across me before, I'm Hati Valcoran, and to learn game development I am working on a dark fantasy pixel art game with the help of Template88, to release here on Newgrounds.


After focusing on making the game for much of this year, the time for release keeps inching closer so it is time I renew my efforts to find daring souls brave enough to venture into the woods.

Forest Shack 2 is a rustic and atmospheric take on dark fantasy made with pixel art, where a hunter has to face how the forest that they have known for so long has turned into a dangerous place corrupted by an unknown power.


Welcome to the land of the Elk,


As the development for Forest Shack 2 has continued to advance, we have come across an issue that cannot be just solved by hitting our head against the nearest forest critter until one of the two gives way.


And so I have come to ask for your help.


We need hunters* brave enough to delve into the dark forests!

In order for the new mechanics to set in properly, they must be tried and true.

I have ill tidings hunter, for our prophets and astrologers have all fled, screaming ill portents!


This month, an apocalyptic weather is coming to the land of Forest Shack.


A rain of burning rats is upon us!

After our closed alpha for the tutorial section of Forest Shack 2, all our efforts were turned to refining and developing our combat inputs and now that those efforts have borne fruit it is time to turn our focus back towards the grander game.


Or would be, if the skies weren't falling on us with a squeak!


But should we let an itsy bitsy apocalypse stop us? No! It may empty the cheese from our pantries, exhaust our cats, and nibble holes in our boxes. But we will not be so easily defeated!


So in that spirit I present to you this month's update hereby named,


Flaming Rat Weather


  • The first of three planned biomes

  • Two new combat mechanics


  • New skill tiers


  • Dialogue


  • A very suspicious looking deer


These are the goals we'll aim to reach at Forest Shack 2 by the end of these apocalyptic weeks.


And were we to fall and fail, may the deluge of rats cleanse us all.

Forest Shack 2 will be entering its first round of playtesting in a closed beta in less than ten nights.


The first draft of the tutorial area will be prepared for the testers and we will be receiving feedback on the new combat mechanics as well as the new exploration system, the brand new Bestiary, and our redesigned combat.


There is much left to do, and the combat is nowhere near its final form. But to make sure that we are building in the right direction, we must be certain of one thing above all others. That people have fun with it.


Have a good night hunters, and remember. Trust a deer, and the night ends in fear.

Welcome everyone,


For those that don't know me, I'm Hati Valcoran, a neophyte game developer. Well met, I hope you hold a grudge against deer.


For those that do know me, nice to see you again.


After the warm welcome you have all given my first game, Forest Shack, I have decided to stop development at the 1.5 version instead of changing it further.


So what comes next?


Forest Shack 2!


While Forest Shack tried to tell a story through its atmosphere, graphics and mechanics, now that we have left our home behind it is time to face what's ahead.


Forest Shack 2 will have:


  • New areas


  • New enemies


  • New skills


  • Items and Potions


  • Exploration


It will focus on more intense combat, because being forced to leave your home doesn't mean that you will be welcome where you are going.


This is a mock-up made early in the development of Forest Shack 1, and while we are taking a new approach it'll help in giving an idea of the coming changes for those of you who played Forest Shack.
